SUPERAntiSpyware Free 5

"Remove ALL the Spyware, NOT just the EASY ones!" That's the motto across the top of SUPERAntiSpyware Free 5 (free, direct), and it's an excellent goal. Too bad, then, that the product itself falls so far short of that goal.SUPERAntiSpyware Free 5 : Focus on Cleanup

From the name you might think that this tool is specifically aimed at removing spyware. Maybe it's unfair that I challenged it with the same full spectrum of threats that I use for other antivirus products? But in fact the product's support page states that it will "Detect and Remove Spyware, Adware and Remove Malware, Trojans, Dialers, Worms, KeyLoggers, HiJackers, Parasites, Rootkits, Rogue Security Products and many other types of threats."

SUPERAntiSpyware Free 5 : Ready to Scan
Like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Free 1.51, SUPERAntiSpyware is a removal-only tool. Real-time protection against new attack is reserved for the separateSUPERAntiSpyware Professional 5. This cleanup focus is very evident in the main window's design, with a "Scan your Computer" button that's bigger than the rest of the controls.

You can choose a quick scan or a scan of critical areas only, or pick custom scan to fine tune where the product looks for threats. For testing, I always chose the complete scan. This option gives you a further choice of whether to activate the "Scan Boost" feature, which speeds scanning by using more CPU resources.

In testing I found that a complete can with the default low Scan Boost took 16 minutes on my standard clean test system, while using high Scan Boost only cut that to 15 minutes. Since the average scan time for recent products is 25 minutes, SUPERAntiSpyware is plenty fast.

On finishing a scan it summarizes its findings, then offers a full list of the threats it found, categorized by severity. By default the precise file and Registry traces for each threat are hidden, but you can reveal them with just a click. Serious threats are marked for removal by default. I also made sure to check the box to remove lower-risk threats.

Security Repairs
SUPERAntiSpyware includes an interesting feature titled Repairs. Many persistent threats change Windows or browser settings to make it harder for a user who's trying to remove them. They may disable Task Manager, ban access to REGEDIT, or change Internet Explorer's security zones, for example.

The Repairs page includes options to undo many of these changes. Some are simple and safe, like re-enabling Task Manager. Others include a warning that the system administrator or a legitimate application may have made the change. Expert users can make good use of this feature; non-experts should probably refrain except under instruction from tech support.
